Minecraft Enchanting Guide

Minecraft is one of the most fun games to play if you know how to play it. While most things are intuitive and require little to no guidance, some stuffs like Enchanting requires a guide. Most of your tools can have multiple Enchantments and some of them are mutually exclusive(I will mention if so).

In this post, I'll share you combinations of best Enchantments for your tools.

There are two methods of obtaining Enchantments

1. Through Enchanting Table - You need to build an Enchantment Setup with Bookshelves to get best enchantments.

2. Through Books - Books can be obtained from treasure chests(chest found in naturally generated structures like dungeons, temples, shipwrecks, bastion, etc), fishing, by trading with villagers and by bartering with Piglins in Nether.

Although a level 30 Enchanting setup often yields highest level of enchantments, getting more than one enchantment on a single tool is a gamble. If you are lucky, you will get upto 3 enchantments in the first try, else you would need multiple attempts with spare tools.

If you are having a hard time getting good enchantment, I'd recommend building a trading hall with dozen of librarians to get enchanted books.

Now that you know how to get all the Enchantments, here are the best Enchantments for each essential tools:

    Best Enchantments for Helmet

Must Have- Respiration III(additional underwater time before drowning starts), Aqua Affinity(increased mining speed under water), Unbreaking III(increases durability, or to be more precise, decreases the chances of getting damaged), Mending(only obtainable from Enchanted books, uses some of the XP to repair equipped tool/gear)

Should have- Any one Protection Enchantment(Protection IV, Projectile Protection IV, Fire Protection IV, Blast Protection IV) [note: you can only have 1 of these 4 on a single piece of armour]

Optional- Thorns III(not really useful in Survival, mostly used in PvP game modes but beware, takes a toll on durability)

    Best Enchantment for Chestplate

    Must Have- Unbreaking III, Mending

Should have- Any one Protection Enchantment(Protection IV, Projectile Protection IV, Fire Protection IV, Blast Protection IV) [note: you can only have 1 of these 4 on a single piece of armour]

    Optional- Thorns III

    Best Enchantment for Leggings

Must Have- Unbreaking III, Mending, Swift Sneak III

Should have- Any one Protection Enchantment(Protection IV, Projectile Protection IV, Fire Protection IV, Blast Protection IV) [note: you can only have 1 of these 4 on a single piece of armour]

    Optional-  Thorns III

    Best Enchantment for Boots

Must Have- Unbreaking III, Feather Falling IV, Mending

Should have- Either Depth Strider III(recommended, faster swimming) or Frost Walker II(freezes water), plus any one Protection Enchantment(Protection IV, Projectile Protection IV, Fire Protection IV, Blast Protection IV) [note: you can only have 1 of these 4 on a single piece of armour]

Optional- Thorns III, Soul Speed III(only obtained by bartering or in Bastion Remnant)

Note- You may have noticed you can equip only one Protection type enchantment on one armour piece. Since there are total 4 pieces and 4 of Enchantments, you should try to get 1 unique one for each armour piece.

    Best Enchantment for Sword

Must Have- Looting III(chances of extra mob drops, increases the chances of rare drops like Wither Skull), Unbreaking III, Mending.

Should Have - Sharpness V(extra damage in general) or Smite V(extra damage to undead mobs like zombies, skeletons, etc, useful for mob XP farms) or Bane of Arthropods V(extra damage to spiders, bees, silverfish and endermites) [all three are mutually exclusive]

Optional - Fire Aspect II(sets the mobs on fire, usefull for farming cooked food from animals without needing the furnace but hostile mobs can set you on fire too, not to mention it makes the Endermen go haywire), Knockback II(as the name suggests, it knock away the mobs, good for fighting horde of zombies or creepers, terrible for ranged mobs like skeletons and trident wielding drowned), Sweeping Edge(good for grinding mobs, terrible around pets, also exclusive to java edition)

    Best Enchantment for Axe

Must have - Unbreaking III, Efficiency V, Mending

Should have - Silk Touch(for picking up Bookshelves, Campfire, Bee Hive, Whole Melon, etc) or Fortune III(useful for getting saplings, apples, etc, also increases the drop rates of certain crop like sweet berries, carrots, nether warts, etc) [both are mutually exclusive]

Optional - Sharpness V, Smite V, Bane of Arthropods V. You might have noticed that an axe deals more damage than an unenchanted sword of same material, so some people prefer using Axe, these enchantments allows 1-hit kill for most mobs. [all three a mutually exclusive]

    Best Enchantment for Bow

Must have - Unbreaking III, Power V(increases damage), Punch II(knockback effect)

Should have - either Infinity(unlimited arrows, you only need atleast 1 arrow in your inventory. Doesn't work with special/enchanted arrows) or Mending  [mutually exclusive]

    Best Enchantments for Crossbow

Must have - Unbreaking III, Mending, Quick Charge III(reduces reloading time)

Optional - Multishot(shoots 3 arrows at once but be careful with multishot, you may hit a friendly by accident) or Piercing IV(can pierce through mobs to hit multiple lined up targets at once)   [mutually exclusive]

Optional - Silk Touch(for collecting Leaves) or Fortune III(for farming Apples and Saplings)

    Best Enchantments for Fishing Rod

Unbreaking III, Mending, Lure III, Luck of the Sea III.

    Best Enchantments for Elytra

Rest of the tools and equipments don't require enchanting. Enchant them only if you have excess of XP and books or you just like to see them shining.
